On a fine Saturday morning in September, 15 teams (10-16 players) of young people gathered in Otara for the very first Bible Society Tag Tournament hosted by BSNZ, Auckland South.
Although most of the teams were from Church youth groups in the South we also had a couple of family teams from within the wider community participate on the day.
We opened our tournament in a word of prayer and gave thanks to the Lord for such a beautiful day. Those who had come were again reminded that the reason we had gathered together, apart from playing Tag, was to raise funds towards providing class sets of Bibles for children in Christian Religious Education classes, (formerly known as Bible in Schools) right across the country.
The players and their families set about erecting their tents and gazebos as they prepared themselves for a great time together. With every team guaranteed a minimum of 4 games and then the finals, the scene was set for a wonderful day out. There were 5 teams in the men's section and 10 teams in the mixed. As the day progressed many of us on the side lines were thoroughly entertained by the outstanding skills and abilities of the players on the field.
In the end the top 2 men's teams, Chutzpah 274 and Watchmen, played off for first placed honours with Chutzpah 274 being the eventual winners.
In the finals of the mixed section Protons played Otara Baptist Church (OBC) and at the end of full time Protons claimed the win making them the top team from within the mixed grade.
Well done to all of those who made the final and particularly to Chutzpah 274 and Protons!
Tag football is a growing outdoor recreational team sport that has competitions running throughout New Zealand. Eight players from each team are on the field at any one time. Players wear shorts with a velcro patch on each side. A strip of cloth is attached to the velcro, known as a tag. The object of the game is to score tries. Defenders prevent this by tagging - removing the tag from the shorts - the ball carrier. For more info on the game of Tag please go to: www.nztagfootball.co.nz
Although Bible Society New Zealand hosted this years' Tag Tournament, the success of the day would not have been possible without the help and support from the collective contribution of the wider community.
Thank you to each and every one of you for your efforts and assistance in making the day the success it was. Praise the Lord!
We look forward to seeing you all for next years' tournament!
