The Bible Society Waihi Action Group held their annual quiz on 19 September at the Baptist Church.
This was an occasion when the Word of God was read, written, and marked for two and a half hours and what a huge celebration that was for the churches of Waihi and also for the work of Bible Society.
Waihi is a comparatively small mining town on the East Coast between Tauranga and Thames, and Action Group Chairperson Del Bluett did a fantastic job of challenging the churches in Waihi to get teams together and enter the quiz. All the churches in Waihi responded and entered teams: Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Catholic, Elim, Presbyterian, Salvation Army, everybody!
An impressive total of 19 teams competed on the day, filling the church with people who were all very nervous about what they didn't know, but also very keen to find out what they did know.
The 3 person teams competed for two trophies; one for youth (14 and under) and one for adults. A team from the Presbyterian Church took home the youth trophy and the adult trophy went to a team from the Baptist Church.
The E100 Bible Reading challenge was used as the basis for the questions and for over two hours the markers of the quiz were kept on their toes checking answers and adding scores.
A huge afternoon tea was provided following the quiz. (It’s hungry work thinking, writing and marking!) The chattering that followed is also an indication of the pleasure this event gave to so many people.
This was a successful event for Waihi, celebrating and encouraging knowledge of the Bible in all the churches there, which makes it appropriate that those present contributed towards the work of Bible Society literacy programmes.
